A tale of two halves, Thelonious Punk begins with garage breaks and samples, carried by a throbbing bass line and glitch-like effects. It’s menacing and beastly. The urgency with Danny’s flow is tangible, almost breathless when delivering lines, allowing for a desperate result which is magnified given the subject matter of the song.
Throughout the song, vignettes of vocals from Matt McKinnon break up Danny’s vocals. It’s a euphoric and promising message, a stark contrast to the exasperating and tumbling lyrics from Danny. The latter half of the song reaches its zenith; an undisturbed flow on a backdrop of woozy, clinical-eque synths. The lyrics highlight the challenges and hardships faced along the way, along with the importance of perseverance and self-belief – “Exhausted. Of course they forced it. Caustic were the thoughts they fought in this court with, default in fifth gear for fear of falling near the vicinity of my clear vision, fooling afforded divinity caught within tears and incisions”. The song ends with a siren-like synth sound, it’s agitating and unnerving, reminiscent of Danny’s formative years spent in large cities. Unrelenting and relentless.
